    The Cyclops Chronicles

Lots more plundering and pilaging in my future

    Sunday, 6 September 2009 5:23 P GMT+01
So last spring I had the first of what I understand will be an annual cleaning, polishing and fit-check of my prosthetic eye.

    Rain-riding is not my forte

    Friday, 28 August 2009 9:13 A GMT+01
Being out in the elements is both the blessing and the curse of bike touring. When the weather is good, it's an amazing way to travel. When the weather is bad, it can be downright miserable.

Riding the Lofoten Islands, AKA The Chasing the Sun Tour

    Wednesday, 19 August 2009 9:08 A GMT+01
First off, this place is STUNNING. Any photograph you've seen does not do it justice...even under the cloud we've been trying to outrun for two days.

Entry drought brought to you by my "real job"

    Saturday, 18 April 2009 9:46 P GMT+01
No, I haven't run afoul of my company's internet policy (though I do admit to pushing the envelope whenever possible). I got home from Iceland on Monday night onlu to be whisked off on a departmental retreat/client visit Tuesday morning.

2009 Resolution: Keep my hands to myself near naked strangers

    Thursday, 1 January 2009 6:01 A GMT+01
So somehow I got it into my head that it would be a good idea to take my brother to Malmo's Kallbadhus for a New Year's Eve dip.

    An unexpected consequence of darkness

    Tuesday, 9 December 2008 5:52 A GMT+01
We are now well and truly in the throes of the southern Sweden winter, which means very limited daylight…and what sun you do get see is usually filtered through very thick, gray clouds.

I'll not be missing it this time, Mateys!

    Friday, 19 September 2008 11:53 A GMT+01
Avast, me hearties! It’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day, something that I’ve managed to space the last two years in a row. But given the fact that I now have regular occasion to wear an eye patch, I have NO excuse for not celebrating!

Small children + big street festival = Danger, Will Robinson!

    Tuesday, 19 August 2008 7:02 P GMT+01
I've never been a fan of big crowds, something I blame on the fact that I'm not terribly tall. (My face ends up at arm-pit level when stadning next to most adults.) And since losing my right eye last winter, I'm even less comfortable with them.

Summer weather took a vacation instead

    Friday, 15 August 2008 2:51 P GMT+01
Evidently Mother Nature did not want us to do a bike tour this summer. Dr. Darling and I have been on vacation for the last 2 weeks with plans to spend 5 or 6 of those days on a bike tour.

Bornholm-bound, come hell or high water

    Tuesday, 12 August 2008 9:47 A GMT+01
After a week-long postponement due to crappy weather, the Swede and I are departing on our much anticipating summer bike tour today. Which is not to say that conditions have gotten any better. (In fact, it's raining as I type this.)

    Farewell fair Switzerland

    Saturday, 17 May 2008 8:55 P GMT+01
After five fantastic days in Germany visiting some dear friends, we’re now on our way back to Zurich to catch the flight home.

Sweden screws with yet another holiday tradition

    Tuesday, 25 March 2008 12:38 P GMT+01
Easter Weekend was a four-day affair here in Vikingland since both Good Friday and Easter Monday are official holidays.

Forgive me for this Third Eye Blind reference...

    Monday, 3 March 2008 8:19 A GMT+01
But today was the final fitting for my third prosthetic eye, and I can't see a damn thing out of it! So I had no choice, really.

    Look in the mirror much?

    Thursday, 28 February 2008 9:19 A GMT+01
Evidently I don't. At least not before I leave for work. (And if my colleagues have noticed, they've been too polite to day anything about it.)

    An eye for an eye...

    Friday, 15 February 2008 12:03 P GMT+01
So I was supposed to pick up my new eye on Wednesday, but after multiple fittings and adjustments, my prosthetist still wasn't happy with the results.

Not quite like losing a contact...

    Friday, 1 February 2008 4:19 P GMT+01
Back before Christmas when I was being fitted for my temporary off-the-rack prosthetic, the nurse warned me to be careful when I rubbed my eyes because it would be very easy to accidently pop it out.

    "Too drunk to wok"

    Friday, 25 January 2008 7:31 P GMT+01
I met a few former colleagues for a drink after work last night while Dr. Darling chose to stay home and get started on dinner, a beef stir-fry. I called home as I was leaving and the following conversation ensued:

    You're gonna do what?!!!

    Wednesday, 16 January 2008 7:59 A GMT+01
I don't know what I was expecting to happen at the first fitting for my permanent prosthetic eye, but I really didn't anticipate having my eye socket squirted full of synthetic modeling goop that hardened to the consistency of frozen Silly Putty.

    Monday morning mammography

    Monday, 14 January 2008 10:41 P GMT+01
Okay, so I can think of a lot better ways to start a week. But at least this mammographical experience was a lot better than my first one.

    When size really does matter...

    Friday, 11 January 2008 11:52 A GMT+01
While the size of the desk in my office hasn't really changed, it sure feels bigger since the arrival of my new flat-screen computer monitor.

So *this* is what it's like to work full-time...

    Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:16 P GMT+01
I returned to the office yesterday for my first full day since the surgery, and to my relief it didn't feel all that much different from any other time I've gone back to work after spending Christmas in the U.S. I was no more sluggish than usual!

Imagining all the party tricks in my future...

    Thursday, 20 December 2007 11:03 A GMT+01
I was fitted for a temporary prosthetic eye this afternoon, a procedure that I thought would be much more complicated than it actually was.

    Running the gauntlet...

    Sunday, 16 December 2007 6:09 P GMT+01
I'm not sure which was more stressful...travelling home from my office alone during rush hour last Friday, or navigating the crowds of Christmas shoppers in th city this afternoon.

Back to the grind, sort of...

    Thursday, 13 December 2007 4:23 P GMT+01
I've been working half-time this week, but doing so from the comfort of The Penthouse-Nordic. It feels really good to be "back on the job", and four hours in front of a computer seems just about right...
