I don't *think* I dreamed this...although I was in bed at the time.
Last night, rather than reading for a bit before going to sleep, I turned on a recent re-run of David Letterman where I saw Paul Anka perform the Nirvana classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in a Big Band/Swing style. It was incredibly bizarre and absolutely mesmerizing.
Who would have ever imagined the 1950's teen idol belting out:
"I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido Yay"
...with a full swing orchestra behind him?
Kurt Cobain had to have been spinning in his grave...if for no other reason than in Paul Anka's rendition of this indie rock anthem, the lyrics were actually intelligible.
He's done an entire album, entitled Rock Swings. Some have said it's very
post-modern; others have said it's just a sad old get trying to shift some
units in a hamfisted way to a younger audience. Didn't Pat Boone try
something similar several years ago? Anyway, if what I've read is correct,
this album came out in the States about five weeks ago, but had already
been available in Germany for the preceeding four months. Given the
general level of music appreciation in Germany (i.e.: David Hasselhoff), I
think we can assume that the album may not be of the highest quality...
LMAO! Excellent point about Germany's musical tastes! After telling
colleagues this story, one of them tracked the album down on Amazon.com and
we were able to listen to samples a few other cuts. "Smells Like Teen
Spirit" was by far the best of the bunch.
