Our first nine hours in Stockholm...

    posted Sunday, 2 September 2007

Other than a single, early navigation glitch, I managed to guide us directly to all of our planned destinations (Sergelstorg, Gamla Stan and the Changing of the Guard at the Swedish royal palace, the Djurgåren Ferry over to the Vasa Museum) today...including the hotel. Dr. Darling AKA "Magellan" would have been so proud of me!

Our room is pretty spacious by European standards and is conveniently equipped with both wireless internet (LOVE IT!) and an oscillating fan, which is a very good thing considering I forgot to pack my little white noise machine. (Though even if I had remembered it, I might have chosen to leave it behind just to  avoid carrying it.) I'm so tired now that I probably wouldn't even have needed 30 minutes of fake rain shower to fall asleep.

I think I may have worn The Mothership out, too.  She's been crashed out for an hour already...and we didn't even have any wine with our wonderfully flavourful yet not over-the-top expensive Italian dinner.  Tomorrow our schedule includes the Royal Canal Tour, Skansen and my company's corporate offices.  That's sure to be the highlight of the trip...NOT.

I LOVE your blog.... as a girl who just moved here a month ago... I am finding your blog to be quite a comfort to me.... I accidently found you by looking up why the heck I can't buy cold medicine in Sweden..... But, you have been the next best thing..... You have been keeping me quite entertained for the worst part of my "REALLY BAD COLD".... Thank you.... and it is so nice to know I am the ONLY American living here.... Hope you enjoyed Skansen; )

Hej "Seattle Gurl"! Welcome to Sweden! I remember what it was like the first couple months I lived here...completely thrilling and totally frightening all at the same time. I'm so glad you've found the blog helpful and/or entertaining! And be sure to stock up on Nyquil the next time you're in the U.S.! Better yet, ask visitors to bring it when they come over!

Oh my GOD.... I would sell my soul to the devil for Nyquil right now.... I could be the Faust of Nyquil.... I am still trying to understand why on earth they don't have cold medicine here..... with as many colds as people get....

As for the excitement.... That ship has sailed, I am afraid.... We spent last Winter in Oslo... for at the time my husband, whom at the time was my Fiancée.... he was working and living in Oslo..... however due to some bad information.... he and I were unable to marry then.... and so my daughter and I had to leave the country for 90 days.... actually we had to leave Europe for 90 days, as we did not have a Visa.... So we are getting quite used to Scandinavia as a whole.... I will say I LOVE Stockholm more than Oslo.... But having to get used to a new country all over again, has lost it's excitement.... I just want to get on with it all.... and learn what to buy at the market.... so I don't have to call my husband up 4 times a day while I am at the store in the meat dept. spelling different things out to him, just so I don't end up with Yack balls for dinner.... that is all I ask..... Anyway... Thank you for your kind and inviting words.... You will be seeing more of me.... I am now an AVID fan of your writing..... Hej då kompis.... Gurl from Seattle

Wait a minute .... I'm not sure I like the comparison -- . Actually as tired as I was after marching around Stockholm all day I felt more like a tugboat! I'm glad you showed me how to use this comment option. I've tried to comment before from home, but since I'm electronically inept, it never happened. Now you're in trouble........

Seattle Gurl...sounds like Norway's immigration offices work a lot like Sweden's...where I always advise people to wait until they've received the same information from 3 separate staff members before assuming they have the correct and complete details for achieving whatever it is they're trying to do. Have you started any formal Swedish training in yet? I enrolled in an SFI (Swedish for Immigrants) program that subscribed to the "total immersion" method of instruction, which meant I had no idea what was going on for the first three months of class. HATED IT. But getting a handle on the language really helped me to feel more at home here...and a little less dependent on my Swede. Lycka till!

Mothership...I think I already regret showing you how to use the comment function!
