    1st monocular road-trip completed!

    posted Sunday, 2 December 2007

Okay, so I had my Mom along as wing-man, but the two of us managed to get ourselves from The Penthouse-Nordic to Hamstad by train on Saturday without incident, unless you count the malfunctioning ticket machine at Malmö Central and being bumped from three different seats by folks with reservations.

Normally this is not the kind of road-trip I would choose to take 10 days after a major surgery, but my mother-in-law was scheduled to move from Laholm to Halmstad this past weekend and most of that side of the family was assembled for the event. It seemed like a good opportunity for my Mom to get a chance to see everybody, so while Dr. Darling went up on Friday night to help with the final packing, we (not being able to be much assistance to the moving crew) waited until the following afternoon to make the journey.

I always forget how much I hate taking the train on the weekends. Turns out I don't like it any better with one eye!  After every trip I swear to myself that I'm going to spring for reserved seats the next time, and then I never do it.  The seat-shuffling was especially maddening this time because my Mom just isn't as steady on her feet since she broke her knee last year.

We stayed over night at my brother-in-law's house, and his kids (ages 3 and 1) weren't the least bit phased by my eye-patch.  I also managed to get through three fairly elaborate meals without spilling anything, which is even more impressive considering I had wine with two of them!

We spent Sunday afternoon in Falkenberg at my father-in-law's place, and then he drove all three of us down to Malmö so we were spared the train ride back. All in all, a very successful trip...though I was completely wiped out when we got home.  My stamina is still seems to be a long way off from what it was pre-surgery.

Clearly I need to build more naps into my recuperation scheme.
